Acid Reflux

Acid Reflux

Another term used for this condition is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The most frequent symptom is heartburn or indigestion. Typically, acid reflux is thought to be caused by having too much acid in your stomach. It is thought to be associated with a weakness of the lower esophageal sphincter that allows the acid to move back up the esophagus.

What is happening is after food passes through your esophagus into your stomach, a muscular valve called the lower escophageal sphincter closes, preventing food or acid to move back up. So when this valve is not working properly or relaxes inappropriately, it allows acid from your stomach to flow backwards into your esophagus.

Heartburn is the primary symptom of acid reflux — a burning sensation that radiates up from your stomach to your chest and throat. It can be bothersome at night. You may experience symptoms after eating a big heavy meal and it may be worse when lying down, especially on your back.

Modifying your diet – Eating large amounts of processed foods and sugars is a sure fire way to worsen acid reflux as it will upset the bacterial balance in your stomach and intestine.

Instead, you’ll want to eat a lot of vegetables, and high quality, organic, and locally grown foods. You can also supplement with a high quality probiotic or make sure you include fermented foods in your diet. This will help balance your bowel flora.
